Automist survived four rounds of judging, beaten over 400 projects from 21 countries, and has been chosen by James Dyson as the best project in the Award.
James Dyson said: “This simple but clever device should become a permanent safety feature in the home. Smoke alarms are essential part of modern life but have remained fundamentally unchanged for forty years. Automist not only detects a fire but can put it out as well.”
Automist is being commercialised by Plumis Ltd.
- Awarded joint 1st place in the Toyota iQ Design Challenge (16th January 2009)
In a creative partnership with Toyota, Royal College of Art students were tasked to help promote innovative design for urban living, using Toyota’s new premium city car as a template for excellence. Yusuf impressed the judges with his approach to helping ‘hunt and peck’ typists - something he hopes will appeal to older or first-time keyboard users.

The Lord Snowdon Award is an award for disability, personally made by Lord Snowdon, former Provost of the Royal College of Art. Lord Snowdon is a longtime supporter of the rights of disabled people and works actively in the field of design for disability. Judges Comment: "Disabled people are particularly vulnerable in fires. This project makes an ingenious and well-resolved use of existing water mist technology to create a system for all types of environment."
The Helen Hamlyn Award for Creativity is an award for creativity across all disciplines, personally made by Helen Hamlyn, whose Trust has endowed the Helen Hamlyn Centre. Helen Hamlyn's comment: “A very practical idea to help people of all ages avoid neck strain.”

- Awarded first place in Imperial College Business Challenge (13th March 2008)
A group of budding student entrepreneurs won £25,000 last week at the final of the New Business Challenge at Imperial College London.The College-wide business plan competition, organised by Tanaka Business School and held on Thursday 13 March, provides both undergraduates and postgraduates with an opportunity to develop and present business ideas in a realistic environment. The winning interdisciplinary team won the prestigious prize for their device called Automist, which focuses on providing quick and easy fire protection in the kitchen. It is a sprinkler system that aims to reduce the number of domestic fires that start in the home.
